During the ravages of the new coronavirus, all kinds of products with the names of “disinfection” and “sterilization” have been snapped up one after another. Are the various disinfection and sterilization products effective and the quality satisfactory?

In February 2020, “Consumer Report” collected the sampling data of disinfection products and hand sanitizer products released by the national and provincial (including some cities) market supervision and management departments and drug supervision departments, and sorted out a total of more than 500 valid data ( 68 disinfection products and 466 hand sanitizers).

Sampling results showed that the performance of disinfection products was relatively good, and only 2 batches of substandard products were found.

In the hand sanitizer, Jiayi, Haodi, Lvjingyuan, Lanbeihe and other brands have products that have been found to be unqualified. And Blue Moon, Welsh, Dettol, Lux, AXE Axe, Lafang, etc. performed well, and no unqualified records were found.

The “Diagnosis and Treatment Program for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 5)” pointed out that lipid solvents such as 56°C for 30 minutes, ether, 75% ethanol, chlorine-containing disinfectants, peracetic acid and chloroform can kill the new coronavirus .

“Consumer Reports” has sorted out the sampling data of disinfection products from the announcements issued by relevant departments. The time span is from September 2014 to December 2019, including chlorine-containing disinfectant products that can kill the new coronavirus, chlorine dioxide disinfection products anti-virus products, and other disinfection products (which can disinfect but are not necessarily effective in killing the new coronavirus). No sampling data of ether, 75% ethanol and chloroform products were found.

A total of 68 batches of disinfection product data were collated this time, and only 2 batches were found to be unqualified.

Chlorine-containing disinfectant generally refers to 84 disinfectant and bleaching water commonly used in life, and its main component is sodium hypochlorite.

Among the 44 batches of 84 disinfectant and bleach products, only one batch was found to be unqualified. It was the “Aibe” brand 84 disinfectant produced by Guangzhou Garcia Cosmetics Co., Ltd., and the unqualified items were “marks”.

20 batches of other disinfection products were sampled, and 1 batch was found to be unqualified. It was the “Super Living Water+” kitchen-specific sterilizing cleaner produced by Shanghai Jingbao Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. The unqualified items were microbial killing tests, coliform bacteria , The killing effect of Staphylococcus aureus does not meet the requirements of “GB 14930.2-2012 National Food Safety Standard Disinfectants”.

According to statistics, the main reason for the failure is that the total active substance content/total active substance content does not meet the standard, followed by the total number of colonies exceeding the standard.

The content of “total effective substances” refers to the content of surface active substances in detergent products, which is one of the important components of hand sanitizer products. In general, the higher the total active content, the stronger the detergency. Unqualified hand sanitizers in this project cannot achieve the desired decontamination effect.

The “total number of colonies” is an item in the microbial indicators. The QB/T 2654-2013 “Hand Sanitizer” standard stipulates that the “total number of colonies” in the hand sanitizer shall not exceed 1000 CFU/g or mL. The purpose of using hand sanitizer is to wash off the bacteria on the hands, and the products with the total number of colonies exceeding the standard will not only fail to clean, but will also cause secondary pollution.

And “pH value” is an important indicator to measure the acidity and alkalinity of hand sanitizer. In order to protect the skin of the hands, the pH of the hand sanitizer should generally be controlled within the range of neutral acidity. If the product with unqualified pH value is used for a long time, it will cause certain irritation to the skin of the hands, and may also cause skin damage.
