According to foreign media reports, the FAA has authorized the first-ever company to approve the use of autonomous drones in the field of unmanned operations. The agency’s move comes as the agency is creating new rules to develop oversight of the broader corporate drone paradigm in the U.S., which lags other developed nations in adopting industry-friendly guidelines for commercial drones.

Boston-based AmericanRoboTIcs, a developer of autonomous unmanned aerial systems designed for harsh environments, received approval from the FAA last week, the first from a federal agency. “Decades of hope and vision have finally come true, and we are proud to be the first company to meet the FAA’s comprehensive safety requirements, which previously limited Commercial viability of drones.”

Over the past few years, drone companies have worked closely with the FAA to set safety parameters and demonstrate how drone technology works. AmericanRoboTIcs’ approval comes after a four-year test program surrounding its Scout line of drone products. In a recent test, the company put its drones on up to ten autonomous missions a day.
