Millimeter-wave radar sensors help meet Euro NCAP’s child presence detection to achieve higher safety star ratings and provide drivers with important safety features that automakers can provide with a single chip for simpler, More compact design.

When shopping for a new car, safety-conscious consumers look to the New Car Evaluation Association (NCAP) for ratings. Globally, NCAP ratings provide scores for the safety features of new vehicles so consumers can make informed decisions from authoritative and reliable sources. By using in-vehicle radar, automakers can develop child presence detection requirements that meet the NCAP.

NCAP ratings vary by region, but Euro NCAP has been promoting the Child Presence Detection (CPD) program in vehicles as part of its roadmap. Automakers can earn four Euro NCAP points by meeting sensor requirements to detect unattended children in vehicles.

Euro NCAP’s latest test and assessment methodology, published in May 2021, can award up to 3 points if sensors are able to detect the presence of unsupervised children in the vehicle and provide initial and escalation warnings. Additional points can be earned by implementing intervention mechanisms, such as alerting parents or turning on the engine and air conditioning. Automakers are increasingly emphasizing the importance of such safety features and are working hard to meet consumer demand. And credits aside, adopting this system can actually save children’s lives.

Texas Instruments’ 60-GHz radar sensor brings in-vehicle sensing systems farther, detecting unattended children in the second and third rows of a car (including footwell) with a single sensor, compared to other technologies With better accuracy and cost performance.

The FCC recently approved multiple Tier1 and OEM requests to allow the development of higher output power 60-GHz radars inside vehicles, enabling 60-GHz radar sensors to be used for precise sensing inside the car.

Use a single sensor to detect children in the third row

Children’s testing protocols have been tested by multiple companies. For example, TI used a single-chip 60-GHz radar sensor to perform several tests related to child presence detection in a two-row SUV. Tests include detecting children (simulated using breathing dolls) in rear or front-facing car seats, or even lying down in the footwell. Just one sensor detects the presence and position of children with high precision in three rows including the footwells (2nd and 3rd row).

New signal processing techniques improve detection reliability and accuracy. The sensor’s wide field of view allows for detection across three rows of cars. Enhanced signal processing techniques can further improve detection, such as some special cases. The two-row SUV is even more accurate, detecting when a child is on the floor of the first-row driver or passenger.

As shown in Figure 1, the sensor is installed on the roof in the middle of the three-row seat.

Figure 2 shows the accuracy of the sensor in detecting passengers. As you can see, a single sensor can detect not only children (dolls) in the seat, but also positions such as the floor inside the car.

The above demo using a single-chip solution can help automakers comply with automotive ASIL B safety levels.

Some sensors have built-in cryptographic engines that provide enhanced security features such as secure boot mechanisms. This encrypts the sensor image and prevents image theft and sensor hacking. Automotive Open System Architecture (Autosar) is validated and available from integration suppliers.

Seatbelt reminder using a single sensor

Another test showed that the detection of up to 5 occupants in a two-row SUV was around 99 percent accurate, so a single-sensor solution could be used to implement a seatbelt reminder system.
