Pioneer develops 3D lidar sensor mass production model with compact structure and wide measurement range

According to foreign media reports, Pioneer and its subsidiary Pioneer Smart Sensing Innovation (PSSI) have developed a 3D lidar sensor mass production model. The sensor is more compact, has a wider measurement range, and has higher performance. It is expected to be used in autonomous vehicles at level 3 and above, and will be released in the first half of fiscal 2020, with full production starting in fall 2020.

The 3D lidar sensor uses laser detection and accurate measurement of the distance of objects, which can determine the 3D information of the surrounding environment in real time, and is an indispensable key device for the realization of L3 and above autonomous vehicles. From 2017 to 2018, Pioneer and PSSI have been providing verification models to companies, and have continued to verify performance through activities such as demonstration testing.

The new 3D lidar sensor uses a micro-electric memory system (MEMS) mirror scanning method, which not only provides high resolution, but also has a size reduction of less than 20% compared with previous models, while the measurement distance is increased by 1.5 to 2 times. This series of products includes three types of sensors, different viewing angles, measuring distances and one type of angle. Different types can be combined to meet customer needs. In addition, Pioneer has developed software that enables such sensors to be used for object detection, vehicle position estimation, and other applications.

Higher measurement performance and longer measurement distances

The MEMS mirror raster scanning method enables detection with high spatial and temporal resolution. In addition, compared to the 2018 model, its measurement distance is increased by a factor of 1.5 to 2, improving detection accuracy for autonomous vehicles as well as other applications.

Compact and durable, suitable for in-vehicle installation

Compared to the 2018 model, its architecture has been consolidated and is less than 20% smaller than the 2018 model, so it can be installed in the vehicle. In addition, the 2020 model is extremely durable, thanks to Pioneer’s unique technology.

3D lidar with three different fields of view and measured distances

Pioneer and PSS will offer three different distance-measuring sensors for short-, medium- and long-range detection. Short- and medium-range sensors with an angular type that combines two 3D lidars. These sensors can be combined to meet a variety of customer needs.

not just for cars

Pioneer expects the sensor to be widely used in scenarios other than automobiles, such as security and traffic monitoring, marine, agricultural and construction machinery or robotics. Pioneer and PSSI will propose a range of solutions to achieve a safe and secure society.
