What is UWB?

What exactly is UWB? In fact, this is a technology designed for precise positioning and secure communication. The earliest location-finding system is GPS, which brings a lot of convenience to everyone. But GPS is more suitable for navigating outdoors, so the strong demand for indoor positioning technology gave birth to UWB technology.

Where is UWB strong?


Jiang Xiong pointed out the five main advantages of UWB technology:

  • First of all, the accuracy is extremely high. The accuracy of UWB technology can reach the centimeter level. There is no higher than this in the current positioning technology on the market.

  • Second, high reliability. For the direct transmission and identification of different objects, the ability of UWB technology to resist multipath interference is the strongest.

  • Third, real-time. The latency of UWB technology is very short, on the order of milliseconds. The response time is 50 times faster than GPS, which is a good performance and will have broad applications in the future.

  • Fourth, the implementation method is relatively easy, the power consumption is low, and various handheld products can be very convenient for application.

  • Finally, security. The current UWB technology all conform to the IEEE 802.15.4z standard.

In application scenarios, UWB can be used indoors and outdoors, and GPS can only be used outdoors; in terms of accuracy, UWB can be accurate to the smallest centimeter level, GPS is 5 to 20 meters, and WiFi is 5 to 15 meters; from coverage In terms of range, UWB is 25 to 250 meters, Bluetooth is 100 to 15 meters, and WiFi is 50 to 150 meters; in terms of data transmission power, UWB ultra-wideband data transmission can do 27M bps; Compared with other technologies, the delay is also in milliseconds, while the transmission rate of Bluetooth is about three seconds; UWB’s ability to find objects is also excellent, and 1000 objects can be found in about 10 seconds. These are the advantages of UWB compared with other positioning technologies.

“Traditional positioning methods mainly rely on signal strength to measure, such as Wifi Bluetooth, this method can generally achieve an accuracy of 5 meters, and the accuracy rate can be 70%. Some technologies can be positioned by narrowband TOF, which is 70% accurate. In the case of high speed, it can only achieve an accuracy of 2 meters. UWB technology is that the recognition accuracy of 100% objects is less than 0.1 meters, which is very strong. Therefore, UWB is definitely the strongest for positioning technology. .” Jiang Xiong said.

How does UWB work?

Jiang Xiong pointed out that in fact, the working method of UWB is very direct. When a radio frequency signal source sends out the signal, the receiving source will immediately receive the signal arriving at a straight line distance, and the flight distance of the signal can be calculated through the received timestamp. Although there are many reflections in the room, there is mutual interference after reflection, and the signal sometimes increases after reflection, but for UWB, all reflections can be ignored, it can directly receive and distinguish the first arriving Signal. UWB has a calculation method that can calculate the shortest distance to its position, which is the signal source. Not only that, UWB can also determine the relative position of the target at the receiving end by arriving at the phase difference, calculating the angle difference, and finally using the distance and angle.

So in which areas will UWB shine?

  • Museum tour. Just like the indoor navigation in the museum, you can listen to the audio explanation when you click on the walkie-talkie at different exhibits. UWB can make a similar function. Wherever you go, a tag will automatically locate and play, and it is very accurate and will not be misplaced.

  • Enhanced Payments. That is, similar to NFC with a certain distance.

  • Wait for a taxi. When there are too many people waiting in the queue and it is impossible to distinguish which car is who is calling, UWB can automatically identify the vehicle you are calling.

  • The subway scans the code to enter the station. UWB can realize recognition at a certain distance, or without reaching out, the machine can help you recognize it directly in the process of walking over.

Of course, in addition to location services, UWB can also provide data services, which is a new application direction. “Using the 27M bps transmission rate and the relatively short delay, data transmission can be done. There are some new applications in data transmission, such as VR applications, mobile phone to mobile phone, mobile phone to headset, and AR, etc. , there will be new applications coming out in the future, and everyone will see it.” Jiang Xiong pointed out.

Will the spring of UWB be far behind?


Having said so much, when will UWB really break out? In Jiang Xiong’s view, now is a good time to explode. “We already have many customers who are very concerned about and use such products. I also mentioned that mobile phone manufacturers such as OPPO and Xiaomi are using or paying attention, and companies such as Midea and other household appliances are paying attention to UWB technology. The application of mobile phones It will drive the development of the market.”
