According to Sina Technology News, on October 29, Sony confirmed that it is considering cooperating with TSMC to build a chip factory in Kumamoto, western Japan, and plans to start construction next year and mass production in 2024. The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately US$8.8 billion.

On October 28, Sony released its financial report for the second quarter of fiscal 2021 as of the end of September, with revenue of 2.37 trillion yen (approximately US$20.862 billion), a year-on-year increase of 13%. The net profit attributable to Sony shareholders was 213.1 billion yen (approximately US$1.876 billion), down 54% year-on-year.

On the earnings call, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Hiroki Totoki said that Sony is considering cooperating with TSMC to build factories. Hiroki Totoki said: “In the face of tight chip supply, stable procurement of semiconductors is a key issue, and TSMC’s factory may be a solution.”

Hiroki Totoki also said that Sony will continue to negotiate with TSMC and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan on the matter. Sony is also considering whether to share its experience of operating a chip factory in Japan with TSMC. In addition, Sony and TSMC are still discussing how the two companies can deepen their partnership.
