Increased interest in RIC testing shows the technology is maturing

This year’s Plugfest highlights the rapid development of the O-RAN ecosystem. As RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) gain more attention, artificial intelligence and big data are introduced into daily operations, and the way network resources are managed is also changing. To mitigate the risk of introducing such new technologies, operators rely on VIAVI tools, including TeraVM RIC tests, to test the performance of RICs in various RAN scenarios, as well as the capabilities of rApps and xApps, and provide the tools needed to generate and train AI models. way of data.
At the same time, VIAVI’s O-RAN standard test suite provides support for conformance, performance, interoperability and end-to-end testing:
Open Radio Unit (O-RU) and Open Distribution Unit (O-DU) – with VIAVI TM500 O-RU tester and Rohde & Schwarz SMW200A Vector Signal Generator (VSG) , FSW signal and spectrum analyzer, VSE vector signal analysis software validated Casa Systems Apex 5G Evo Radio. Open Central Unit (O-CU) – Accelleran O-CU installed on a cloud-native router was tested for performance (load/scale) using the VIAVI TeraVM O-CU tester.
Open Fronthaul (OFH) – Validated Intel FlexRAN™ reference software with IP Infusion fronthaul switch as master clock and Capgemini Engineering O-CU, O-CU using VIAVI TM500 O-DU tester and E500 UE emulator OFH interoperability between DU and core. VIAVI also offers the T-BERD/MTS-5800 for Xhaul transmission and synchronization testing on the Grandmaster Ciena 5164 and 5168 and Cisco NCS540.
Foxconn O-RU was tested for end-to-end interoperability with another vendor’s O-DU and O-CU using VIAVI E500 UE emulator and TeraVM core emulator; TeraVM core emulator, Demonstration of OFH and end-to-end interoperability between Foxconn O-RU, Capgemini O-DU/O-CU and commercial equipment.
RIC – TeraVM RIC testing was used to validate Accelleran dRAX® RIC and xApps, as well as TCS RIC and Traffic Steering xApps. The TeraVM RIC test also supported demonstrations of the Rakuten Communication Platform (RCP), which enables self-healing and optimization of the RAN, including rApp impact compensation through RAN-optimized xApps running on the latest O-RAN SC RIC stack.
